PARIS 2

January can be beyond dreary in New York City with relentless days of grey.  We went to Paris to renew, recycle and find some hot trends.

BIGGEST TREND?  CYCLE AND RECYCLE!

Parisians do eco-friendly, in total style of course, from original recycled clothing couched in a tribal art movement to making a simple bike into a very cool accessory.

The most inspiring new RECYCLED style was found in the Pigalle red light district one night at a party where we met provocateur artist Andrea Crews.

Outside her shop, where the party was held, colorful kids were on the street spray painting and cutting up old clothes to re-fashion them into new.  I spoke with Andrea and she sold me a red velour Sonia Rykiel sweatshirt from the 80′s re-fashioned into a chic voluminous and assymetrical top.  Her mix of piles of recycled clothes, playful kidz, film and color feels very fresh.

Everyone’s favorite Parisian shop Colette put Andrea front and center in the windows. Take a side trip here HERE with a silly, provocative little video to see the fun of Andrea Crews.

from recycling to cycling…

VIOLA PEOPLE! THE BICYCLE TREND!

2488632251_6b8874d705

From vintage couture to…

2885908500_6a1d4025cf-1

the hot swagger of men on bikes to…

2489447666_ce9476ac5b

the effortless chic of a moment…

In Europe Bikes are hotter than ever. See all the cycling blogs from all over the world, especially Chic cyclers in the city and Copenhagen Cycle Chic’s Manifesto.

I loved my bike ride throughout Paris, rivaling my previous high of the speeding Euro car thrill in the tunnels.  New York has been said to be contemplating bike rentals…and I cannot wait to join famed bikers such as photographer Bill Cunningham and writer Michael Musto peddling and plotting in NYC.

I do also love this little blog, Bike in the City blog by Leah.

photo-touriste

And while I am at it, props to the non-biking “eyes of Paris” as well, such as Kamel Lahmadi of styleandthecity.com, one of my favorite street style photographers whom I have had the pleasure of meeting and being photographed by.  A very sweet, honest blogger whose mission is to celebrate the loveliness in everyone. (Why is “nice” really nice now?…it’s a trend;-)

TREND: MOVIE SET RESTOS!

Restaurants we visited were doubly appealing because they have been featured in hot, classic movies. The rooms feel like a movie set, perhaps because also because they are full of a mix of charactors, hot celebutantes, gruff musicians and tasteful, simple neighborhoodies.

L’Hotel du Nord was seen in the Marcel Carne movie, “L’Hôtel du Nord”. We dined one evening with our client, event designer Matthew David and Lori Stolowitz,  in Paris for the Maison et Objet show and my host and best friend, photographer, Patricia Nagy, who is also with Elle International.

We hung out in our Bastille neighborhood at Le Pure Café, a “zinc-café” featured in the Richard Linklater movie “Before Sunset” with Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke.

Philosophe, before meeting up with Stephane and Livio from Public Image PR, was a movie set where just watching all the lovers made me hungry for more than bistro fare.

Also included in this trend…Movies and Habitation at Hotel Costes, of course.

IN THE MIX

On another night, we hit literally 10 watering holes in one night with the Lenny Kravitz design crew and friends, Cara Scouten and Trish Nagy. Doug Booher, a kooky southern gentleman guy in a fringy fur vest, in Paris making the floors for Lenny Kravitz Design, told me of his exploits as the former DJ for the Pontani Sisters.

We traveled to see my friend and client, Sound Producer and DJ, Claude Serieux, here with Kanye. Claude is also one of the conceptualists of the web TV site for contemporary art, Artivi,

Not only is Claude one of the most sweet, decent and talented people I know, he is also the personal DJ for Lou Doillon, the Music Supervisor and Development Manager with The Gotan Project’s‘s Oz Productions and is represented in the United States by our agency, Plant.  You can read more about this globe-trotting Sound Producer, here.

We spent the evening with Malissa Stawicki, the former publisher of Spoon magazine. Here is Trish with our other French famille member, stylist and publicist, Simon Heeger. (doing the look and the lip thing;-) He snarls like that because he is a smart handbag designer and the writer in this blog of a post about Berlin Fashion Week, click here to see that.

SIMPLE ECO SEXY LUXE

The evening ride from Pigalle to the Left Bank on the Vespa of Philippe Mikhailovich, luxury brand expert, was exhilarating and a fine example of simple eco sexy luxe. Phillippe is a brand consultant for luxury brands and Vespas always all over Paris.

I’ve been in love with the simplicity of Petit Bateau since I was 8 and my father sold the brand in his clothing store. I was thrilled then to take a meeting with Helen MacIssac, the VP International at the classic and elegant French brand, Petit Bateau and fall in LOVE again with the endlessly simple chic of PB. Did you know they opened a new home concept store on Madison Avenue?

Celebrities such as Suri Cruise and Katie Holmes are all fans of Petit Bateau’s effortless French chic. Thankfully the retail shops are expanding all over the world.

After this, it was great to see my good friend Samy Chaloncousin of my best friend Monique Baron, in his Marais shop.  He and his mother have been creating beautiful knits for many years, they are very special people, in a most talented and precious family of passionate Egyptian/Parisian Jewish descent. They all care about living and loving well, life and simple, elegant details of all aspects of their lives and this is reflected in their clothes. You can find Samy Chalon at 24 rue Charlot.

Find beautiful hand-knits there, such as this skirt:

After some heart-to-heart with Samy, for simple, yet pungent pleasure, I picked up some Liveros, my favorite fromage before heading back to Trish in the Bastille.

Sunday brunch was at Jill’s, Trish’s friend from UNESCO.  A really friendly and accomplished group of people were there ranging from Xavier Cliquot de Mentque, who is crafting a new champagne (not even in the United States yet) to Emmanuel Rengade, who ditched the financial world to create, Picin Guaba, a stunning, low-tech ECO SEXY LUXE Brazilian retreat…now that is a real recycle and renewal.  Next year….

PS… Given that 1 hour of sleep is the norm when in Paris, a “recycle Paris” fix with a trip to Brazil immediately afterwards is JUST SMART STUFF.

These are just a few of the magnificent men I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with in New York City. Trust there are many more than are listed here, (because sometimes…I do more than work…) but these are top of my list for sartorial style, humor, genourosity and gentleman manners. Artists, Leaders, Kings, Stars and Good Men. That is dandy style.

michael-phelps2

Michael Phelps in the hottest picture I have ever seen of him, this time in Vanity Fair. Vanity in full disclosure… I helped stylist Deborah Watson put this and some other looks together for Michael’s shoot with Bruce Weber. Michael was super sweet, as I trotted him all over to do media appearences and took him through the tough paces at a NYC Speedo launch with media from all over the world, he was gracious throughout.

cator-sparks-from-stylefile

I first met Cator Sparks on our way to a Bombay-themed costume party. Can you tell he had the best outfit from his feather cap to his curled up slippers? Cator’s southern graces, writing and warm smile are always a pleasure to see at a party as is his fierce love for his Harlem neighborhood. This image is from dandy author, Ike Ude’s (next up!) new book, Style File, which I cannot wait to devour!

ike-ude

timothy-greenfield-sanders-look

I met Ike Ude, artist and publisher of ARude magazine through my friend Zari Awodien (also a gorgeous dandy). One Fashion Week a few seasons back I accompanied Ike to his photo sittings appointment with Timothy Greenfield-Sanders for inclusion in his book, Look, a compendium of backstage portraits at Olympus Fashion Week in New York City. Yes, the Baudelaire and contents of his costume chest hidden beneath the floorboards were proffered.

elliott-wilson

Elliott Wilson is the Mackevelli of the Hip Hop world as Editor-in-Chief of XXL magazine and a founding member of the ego trip group. I read his editor letters for years, grumpy, bragging, in-your-face, they were so exciting. When his wife Danyel, now Editor-in-Chief of Vibe magazine, called to do PR for Elliott, I was more than excited. I must admit that Danyel infallibly pulled these outfits for Elliott’s editor shots, but we put him up on the desk to match his Big Daddy prominence. I do like your style Elliott.

79280509BG001_Naeem_Khan_Fr

Robert Verdi is high on my list in the “gentleman” and “fun” categories. Although he usually is seen mixing colours and patterns, I actually love what he did here with grey and silver tones. A multi-tasking mensch, I’ll never forget a chance spotting him on the street while he was chatting away on his cell, he actually waved enthusiastically and stopped to say hi to me clear from the other side of the street without missing a beat. More true phone confessions…a lunch-time phone call for for him in Paris at L’Avenue was a multi-tasking-morning-for-me-in-ma-skivvies-on-my-yoga-mat for a NYC trans-Atlantic phone call. We give good phone.

marc-hruschka

Marc Hruschka is the president and chief executive of Chopard Inc. and he was a panelist for our luxury event hosted by Susan Tabak at The Core Club. Marc is elegant to the max and the only man I have ever seen expertly pull off clearly BROWN shoes with an all blue ensemble. So he ranks high on the list for that. The twinkle in his eye and humor may account for much of his style as well.

louis-sarmiento

Louis Sarmiento is a gentleman. Publisher for The Daily, he is always elegant, thoughtful and committed to his work. Yes, he always looks hot like this.

david-life

David Life is dandy plus plus. I remember him as the proprieter of the Life Cafe in the East Village, next as the owner of the tight cramped Jivamukti East Village yoga studio, one of NYC’s first. Spending time with him over the years, at Ananda Ashram or at Jivamukti has expanded my world and life immensely. I always loved his over-the-top images and when he speaks about cultivating a rebellious attitude so one can remain alert and conscious, he is a man after my own heart. You have it David, you do!

jc

Jason Campbell does not enter a room he slinks. As the creator of the smartest online fashion resource, The JC Report, he also quietly styles some of NYC’s most powerful and chic women. (PS, attenzione! the guy behind him in that very cool hat, I know you are on my mailing list and I remember laughing with you at Jason’s party because we danced in Paris at some other party…except I don’t know your name:-) Please connect with me at your earliest convenience! I wanna add ya to the list yo.

morad-fareed1

Morad Fareed, soccer star and Business Tycoon (!) has temporarily left NYC for Dubai, but from this picture you can see why I HAD to include him here. Our paths crossed in NY because of a shirt from my client, Bogosse and an auction for BPeace and now we speak through Facebook.  An example of how small the world is and how our connections can only be leading us to a greater understanding and good in the world. Ultimately isn’t that style we all can totally agree on? (Obviously for those reasons Barack would be #11 on this list save for the fact that I don’t know him personally AND I just saw Michelle on CNN saying he had holes in his pants.)

Actually, holes in one’s pants never stopped a man from being a Dandy, the main requirement is to be WHOLLY within one’s pants and wear them VERY well.  OK, for sure…HOLY in one’s pants as well…of course.

WILD WOMEN 1990

PARIS 1

01Mar09

Karl, Marc, Olivier, Alber and Ralph.

The creme Parisian designer shows. The runways, the backstage interviews, their boutiques, the parties, the restaurants and the clubs.  little marvin and I hopped on Air India’s psychodelic flying service (aka a plane) to Paris to shoot a TV pilot starring Susan Tabak, professional Parisian shopper and the author of the little red alligator covered book of Paris’ chicest women and their secret addresses, CHIC IN PARIS.

An insider and intimate look at the world, tips and style of Paris’s most famous style icons and the secret addresses that every Parisian knows well.  Here…my mobile phone jottings…

Didier Ludot Opening Party for Alexis Mabille.

To open each season, shop maestro Didier Ludot dedicates his windows to one designer, this year, it was our friend, Alexis Mabille.

Alexis Mabille, known for his clothing inspired by the personality of the androdynous bowtie, is clever and super sweet and we were happy to celebrate outdoors one evening in the Alice in Wonderland-like Palais Royale with celebs and fashion followers.

Chanel.

The Air of Kings, clear and crisp with excitement and electricity in Palais Cage au Oz glass dome. Denim and Gatsby midi’s, sheer with severe pounced down the runway. Chaos and the rushing of masses, bee hiving around Queens and Kings and Celebrities after.

Just saw the film on Lagerfeld’s life, really super-sized life with libertarian German “of course, and you don’t…?” coupled with a binding strength.  Bowls of huge rings in his bedroom, sketching surrounded by pencils and the huge table of friends for a dinner at a villa.

Victoria Beckham and Courtney Love were there.

Waves “hi” and dashing out the same side door with Glenda Bailey EIC of Harpers Bazaar (and my fave editor) and Stephen Gan. (Fun fact from the 80’s: Stephen featured my dress design in pre-men’s Details magazine custom made for for Suzie Funahara, girlfriend of filmmaker and Plasmatic member Chosei Funahara for a Cannes Film Fest party).

Backstage Karl reminded us that for all our political miasma, America saved Europe in WW2 and the world should not forget this.

Karl Speaks.

Louis Vuitton.

little marvin and Jade Dressler at Louis Vuitton: Front row seats n’ champagne behind Kanye West and Dita von Teese.

Awaiting Marc’s appropriation of some “AIR” of artist Richard Prince. Show is rather like opium den (think the wrestling, opium den scene in Emmanuelle more than Richard Prince) with all the AIR of anticipation…

Large pulp sex novels as canvas tenting for the ceiling…”A Call Boy Ring”…” A World of Utter Sensual Pleasure”…love this influence, so much fodder for fun, color and references…

sexperimentFinally…Nurse models Nadja Auerman, Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, Isabell Fontana, Karolina Kurkova, Angela Lindvall and Stephanie Seymour clear veins for the trampy, just-had-sex gypsies to follow (each with a LV bag) following.

Love the ensembles with men’s suit hanging deshabille off the woman’s body and all the sheer fabrics both tight and crumpled like apres…bedsheets and stockings.

Richard Prince show at Guggenheim had all the joke paintings, layered words and clean faux Marlboro ads that could have been the seasons LV in a couture interpretation.

Requiem.

Petit Palais Designers, Julien Desselle and Raffaele Borriello designed jewel-tone satin frocks destined to be shellacked on party girls everywhere. Outside in the crowd, we saw our friend, another fashion icon, Jason Campbell founder of the JC Report… now all new!

Lanvin.

Best of all the shows. Tuxedo’d waitors with circus food trays of ice cream and candy. 1950’s music in french and english, sounds like the stroll, operatic, Jazzercise Diana Ross selections and 1960’s TV show music plus Goldfinger soundtrack. Carnival lights and fireworks. Anna Piaggi. Chloe Sevigny. Kristen Scott.

Nina Ricci.

A dream beyond. Silvers shimmers, bird feathers, rumpled cargo pants, sheer layers, bohemian hair. Icon Olivier emerging from the twin stone walls at the end as a modern Gallic warrior sealed the deal.

My all-time favorite images of young Olivier were shot by my most excellent best friend Trish Nagy of Elle magazine International.

The Shops and Ateliers.

Dior. Paris’ Mattel Barbie Doll Shop Toy.

Molding Everywhere, (decorative not biological).  A fantasy land of mirrors and small inner boutiques to make one feel pampered and precious. Sarah Marinello, our contact is also is a doll. One should have a Middle Eastern Oil man to pay your bill while you go across the street to L’Avenue to refresh. We did all that, minus the oilman and even gave Bruce Willis our seats when we left.

Louis Vuitton.

High Haven of Efficient and Clean Couture.

Reminds me of my aunt’s perfect life and her moth-proof closets. While this Peter Marino ego-fest is stunning to look at and a jewel in the crown for LV…some magic mushroom dust of Marc would go a long way here amongst the perfection.

Lanvin.

Alber Elbaz, the MC of humor and elegance. Here, at the new Lanvin shop at Faubourg St. Honore, the brand history came to life as the iconic brand emblem of the mother and child, famous on the Arpege perfume bottle, expertly interpreted in the window in neon pink plastic mom with a pink robot baby scrambling on her lap. Note: Nice brands link to eternal themes get eternal PLAY. Many thanks to Isabella, PR, and Fabien, Sales, who totally embody the Lanvin brand.

The last operative word here is Parties.

We celebrated the finish of our shoot at the Crillon for the Rock and Republic party DJ’d by Claude Serieux.

Here on champagne duty is little marvin. Who is the Frenchman in blue peering beyond LM’s glass?

We ended our night/morning at Showcase, a hot spot with a dizzying amount of people and energy…all of it always tasty…because it’s life, a movie and it’s Paris.

…and this image of the Lanvin Spring Summer 2008 Collection perhaps can be the emblem for this Paris trip. A rich and sensual garden where a woman prowls as if she was a rare exotic insect.  Full and breezy, funny and seriously aware of the fragility and agility of life.  Hey that’s me!

Welcome to Berlin Fashion Week, one of the youngest Fashion Weeks in the world, but one of the most innovative.  Berlin is the new and hot up-coming fashion pool.  It’s a mix of high-fashion, young up and coming designers, tradeshows and artists.  Berlin is not comparable to Paris or New York, here fashion and the city will be discovered together in delightful moments to enjoy fashion and it’s special lifestyle woven throughout the city.

TREND:  Berlin as a fashion city shows even stronger than other locations and events with its special spirit of fashion, here fashion and art are going hand in hand, it’s more about the streetstyle, architecture and the amazing lifetsyle in this new evolving and structured city.

The 3rd season of the Mercedes-Benz Berlin Fashion Week, 17th July – 20th July 2008, took place at the tent at the historical place “Bebelplatz” surrounded by the Opera, Humboldt University and the glorious boulevard “Unter den Linden” not far away from the “Brandenburgertor”.

On Wednesday night the fashion week was opened by the welcome party of projektGALERIE showrooms and the exhibition opening of Fumi Nagasaka in the heart of Berlin in Mitte, the creative center of Berlin.  Projektgalerie showrooms were established last summer with the concept to consolidate fashion and art. Their main idea is to show international audiences the real Berlin, far away from cold and modern showrooms. Hence, the avantgarde designers were shown in art galleries, a conversation between the designer, artists and the special ambiance of the galleries.

Fumi Nagasaka, photographer based in NYC, was last year so inspired by the film and novel “Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo-Christiane F.” (English:”We Children from the Zoo Station”), that she did a photoshoot about it. Her exhibition was shown during fashion week at j&b-galerie.

The Belgian designer Bruno Pieters, art-director of Hugo, was inspired by the classic-modern architectur of  the “Bauhaus” and the german aviator legend “Elly Beinhorn” from the 1930’s, with her love of adventure, crossing borders and her flights thru savannas, oceans and deserts. The combination of safari elements and clear lines, simple forms and functional details resulted the theme of the collection: safari meets avantgarde.

On Friday the young and upcoming label C.Neeon from Berlin presented their newest collection at the outdoor location in front of the Arts-and Crafts-Museum at Potsdamerplatz.  Sitting outside in an amazing and special ambiance with a lovely dark red raspberry cocktail in your hand watching their newest creation and hoping it’s not starting to rain…the difference of Berlin.  The duo Clara Leskovar (textile designer) and Doreen Schulz (fashion designer) founded their label in 2002, and by 2005 they won the prestigious Grand Prix at the Hyère International Fashion and Photography Festival-France. The distinctive look of C.Neeon design are extensive prints always related to the pattern and silhouettes with intriguing volume and architectural, asymmetric shapes.

On Thursday and on Saturday the SEVEN STAR GALLERY had brilliant events.  At the beginning in 2008 this gallery opened in Berlin,Mitte. The gallerist Thorsten Heinze is presenting unicums international known photographers of the new avantgarde as Joachim Baldauf, Donata Wenders, Helga Kneidl, Detlef Lövenich and Jürgen Nürnberg.  The gallery concept takes you on a trip into the nearly forgotten and lost world of Berlin. The exhibition spaces of the corner house were used as a hotel and cathouse in the 1920’s, laid open and brick-lined walls tell the story of this historical house.  The topical exhibition “Private Collection View Number 2” shows photography unicums of  famous peoples in a really private moment. The Seven Star Gallery was one of my personal hot-spots this season, from important art partons to stylish youngsters, to VIPs and just interesting people in beautiful esthetic moments…personally from Thorsten I know that Mischa Barton herself came into the gallery at Thursday at 3 am in the morning.

Kai Kühne, known from the label “As Four” showed his collection at the last day of Berlin Fashion Week at the tent at Bebelplatz, inspired by Catherine Deneuve in the film “The Hunger” bladerunning to Fassbinder’s “Marriage Of Maria Braun”, kissing Joan Crawford goodbye and falling into Brian Ferry’s arms in his dream: Kai is playing with the elements of a very elegant classic 1940’s silhouette, sharpening its outlines, by accentuating the shoulders and the waist in a very body-concious design. The show was opened by a laser writing Kai’s label on the wall, perfectly underlined with hard electro- music by Portishead mixed by Babak Radboy, an artist from NYC, the strong wet look of the hair and the double pack walk of the models looking like warriors in a modern fashion era.

Berlin Fashion Week’s closing show on sunday was Vivienne Westwood’s “Anglomania”. The last event for Berlin Fashion Week was really packed, everyone wanted to see her newest creation, the atmosphere was really tingly and energized and kind of sad  because of it being the closing show.  The inspiration for S/S 2009 was Greek antiquity, draped column dresses in palin and striped jersey echoing Greek statues while a grape print alluded to Bacchanalian festivals. Motifs from vases adorn tee-shirts and dresses. The look is given a twist with touches of 1950’s couture present in prom dresses and sexy suits.
